Here's an absolutely magnificent One Of A Kind bracelet that was custom made for us by the remarkably talented Navajo/Zuni artist Alex Sanchez.
The story of this bracelet started when we came across a yellow stone in a pawn shop in northern New Mexico. Since we had never before seen a stone like this we asked the shop owner for whatever information he could provide. He said that he had recently purchased a large lot of stones from a local jewelry shop that was going out of business and that this stone was included in that lot. The seller of the lot told him that this stone is yellow turquoise from China.
After doing our "due diligence" we were unable to confirm that it is turquoise. We asked a professional gemologist for his input and he said that it could be dyed howlite. We were told that the stone could be chemically tested but that the test would leave a stain. Since we think the stone is magnificent, whatever it's made of, we decided not to have the test done.
We brought the stone to Alex and asked him to perform his magic with it. The results can be seen in the pictures displayed below.
When the bracelet was completed we asked Alex what he thought of the quality of the stone. Alex told us the LAPIDARIST (stone cutter) said it was a high quality gemstone grade cab that appeared to be "like turquoise" but couldn't be sure what the stone was without chemically testing it, and we didn't want this unique stone and silver cuff ruined.
So, maybe it's yellow turquoise, we really don't know for sure. There is very little information coming out of China about their turquoise mining. But, whatever it's made of, it's certainly beautiful and definitely very unusual..
Here are the details:
The inside of the bracelet measures 5+3/4" long, plus there is a gap of 1+1/8". It is 2" wide and weighs a hefty 168 grams (5.8 ounces).
The back is stamped sterling and has Alex's hallmark. It has a bit of flexibility so a small, careful, size adjustment can be made. However, we strongly suggest that any size adjustment should be made by a professional silversmith or jeweler.
