This is a beautiful necklace and earring set that was handmade by the wonderfully talented Santo Domingo Pueblo artist Maggie Garcia.
Maggie made the three strand, choker style, necklace with Melon Shell beads, each of which she hand cut and hand drilled. She separated each of the larger beads from each other with one smaller bead.
The three strands are joined at the back in silver cones.
She made the double hoop earrings the same way, but she added some Olive Shell Heishe beads at the ends of both hoops.
It's very rare these days to find any artist who is willing, and able, to make beads by hand, rather than buying machine made beads from a jewelry supply store.
If you look carefully at the pictures displayed above (especially the close up pictures) you can see that each of the beads is slightly different than the others. The thickness varies from bead to bead.
That's what happens when the beads are made by a human being, rather than a robot.
Can you imagine how many hours of very tedious labor Maggie spent making this beautiful set?
The necklace measures 18" long and it weighs 40 grams.
Each earring is 3+1/2" long (including the ear wire) and the pair weighs a very comfortable 15 grams (7.5 grams each).
We are the only resellers that represent Maggie on the internet, and we're very proud to be able to sell her beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings. We visit her quite often, at her home on the Pueblo, and we love to watch as she makes her new pieces of jewelry for us.
