Here's a stunning, black marble, badger fetish that we purchased at the Zuni artist's co-op during our last trip to the Zuni Pueblo in southern New Mexico.
Handmade by the wonderfully talented team of Adrian and Jacqueline Cachini this fetish measures 2" long, 7/8" wide and 5/8" tall. It weighs
36 grams and the bottom has the artists hallmark.
Please see the pictures displayed above as they will describe this stunning fetish better than any words we may write.
They carved this fetish from a piece of Black Marble and then added turquoise eyes and two small pieces of turquoise on the badgers back.
American Indians have used fetishes throughout recorded history. Fetishes are believed to hold magical powers that protect the owner, or craftsmen, from various problems of mind or body.
If you're interested in learning more about Zuni fetishes do a Google search and read the Wikipedia article which is quite informative.
Recently fetishes have become desirable to a different group of people for a totally different reason. Poker players use flat bottomed fetishes, like this badger, as card protectors, hoping it will bring luck to them while playing their poker game.
