This is a vintage, necklace and pendant that we purchased at an estate sale in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
It was handmade by Alice Long, a Navajo silversmith whose jewelry is sought after by many Native American jewelry collectors, and is rarely found available for sale these days.
The first feature is the sterling silver necklace that Alice made entirely by hand. It contains lots of round beads that are interspersed with beads of various other shapes. Alice strung the beads on a heavy silver chain to make it very durable.
The second feature is the beautiful, handmade, silver pendant that Alice decorated with a bright blue turquoise stone, a large hand stamped silver leaf, a twisted rope, several raindrop beads and a few half round silver applications.
As the pictures displayed above will show you, this is a magnificent example of older Native American art that has the combination of beauty and very high quality that's rarely found in jewelry made these days.
Can you imagine how many hours of intensive labor it took for Alice to make, by hand, each of the 88 beads that she used to make this amazing necklace?
The necklace measures 28" long. The pendant is 2+5/8" long and 1+1/4" wide. Combined, they weigh a very comfortable 65 grams.
As with most, vintage, Native American jewelry there is no stamp that indicates the silver purity. However, due to the obvious patina, we are quite sure that the silver is sterling.
Although we don't know it's exact age, the seller told us that it was made during the mid 1970's, which is when Alice first started using the hallmark that's stamped on the back of the pendant.
Despite it's age and travels this wonderful old beauty is still in remarkably good condition. It apparently was very well taken care of by it's previous owner(s) as it shows only very minimal signs of wear.
It can use a bit of cleaning and polishing but we'll leave that for it's next owner. Our policy is that we do not clean vintage jewelry as most collectors prefer to receive these older pieces "as is".
If you're a true fan of older, high quality, Indian made jewelry, this necklace and pendant will certainly make a great addition to your personal jewelry collection.
